Sabor de Almeria, the brand behind a number of recent food initiatives aimed at attracting tourism to Almería Province, is to attempt its most ambitious project yet. They have today announced their intentions to launch a new and exciting International Food & Drinks Festival, to be held in Mojacar during May and June 2012. The festival is to be named Sabor de Almeria – Festival Internacional de la Alimentación y Bebidas.

With a growing need to draw new ‘independent tourists’ to the area en masse and extend the summer season beyond its current six-week period, Sabor de Almeria is planning a festival of  ‘significant proportion,’ drawing upon the experiences of other incredibly successful food and literary festivals held all over the world. Whilst it is acknowledged to be a ‘huge task,’ Steve Homer, the owner of the Sabor de Almeria brand, believes that the project is entirely feasible, even in a depressed economy, as he is already drawing upon the experiences of other successful festivals around Europe.

“Whilst we accept we do not have a population the size of Brighton & Hove which hosts a successful annual food festival attracting 145,000 foot-fall visitors during their festival month, we have to start somewhere. We take comfort from the fact that the small market town of Hay-on-Wye on the borders of England and Wales which has a population of only 1,500, one hotel of note, public transport that runs once a week, and no direct airport access, draws audiences of 80,000 people during their 10 day Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival. Now in their 24th year the event attracts speakers from all over the literary world together with the likes of former US Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Nobel Prize winners, and notable entertainers including Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, Bob Geldof, Van Morrison and many more. Their audience travels from every continent to attend the events and we intend to learn from the organisers’ success to bring much needed tourism to Almería Province. If we achieve a footfall of 2,000 new visitors in the first year, then we’ll be happy, but we’d be even happier if the event were  to attract 4,000 or 5,000 new people to Almeria Province. It will be a great foundation upon which we can grow.”

Having already secured the support of many of Almería’s top chefs, and the interest of many bar and restaurant owners, Steve’s attention is turning to establishing a team of like-minded, dedicated and passionate individuals to carry the project forward over the next 12 months, and also to seeking the much needed corporate sponsorship from businesses far and wide.
