Let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man. When tillage begins, other arts will follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization.–Daniel Webster

These are the colors of California farms — rich and vibrant!

Summer vegetables are brimming with freshness, and the abundance!  Everywhere I set my eyes, there is something that draws me to it. I can’t control myself; I want to shoot every colorful heap I see. I guess it’s the temptation to enjoy them, visually, later? After all, it is a feast for the eyes.

A trip to the farmers market is always the greatest of treats for me. I’d rather be surrounded by this beauty, under a clear blue sky, than anywhere else behind closed doors. There is a feeling of earthiness being surrounded by the very basic commodities. Nothing fancy — just vegetables, fruits, breads, oils, honey, plants, and flowers….yet there is a sense of calm. Some are busy making purchases to fill their larder; others are just sauntering through, taking their time as they gather what they need. Some familiar faces, a few cordial greetings here and there. Of course, there is curiosity about new discoveries and helpful chats with the vendors to learn more. But everyone seems to be enjoying their visit — kids and adults.

It is a time to bond over a bag of popcorn, an ice cream, a cold drink, or just a stroll. Walking alone or holding someone’s hand, it’s a peaceful and friendly place to be.

Just a place to watch the world go by!

Come along and see what I found. It is just vegetables this time. There is more to come in future posts.

Hope these beautiful vegetables inspire you to make something special. I would love to hear from you about your creations. Just click the Contact Us button at the top right of the home page.

Stay close to the earth!

“Farmers markets are green shoots coming out of the gun. They represent hope and they need to be cultivated. But we have a juggernaut coming at us.” — Jerry Brown
