Their 50th birthdays in sight, the acclaimed travel and food writer David Downie, and his wife, the photographer Alison Harris, decided that trekking from Paris to Spain, would be just the thing. They are based in Paris, so the Way of St. James, for a millennium one of the world’s most celebrated pilgrimage routes, was right at their back door. Neither Alison nor David is religious — the classical pilgrimage experience was not what they were seeking. What were they seeking? Renewal, changed perspectives. Perhaps to test themselves, over 72 days and 1100 km of — at times — very rough terrain. And thereby hangs a tale.

ELATIA HARRIS: There has been a lot in the news lately on pilgrimage, however one understands the phenomenon. People who do it talk about needing to lose their routine and find themselves. Most set out alone, meeting others en route. You and Alison started together.

DAVID DOWNIE: Our choice to walk together happened organically. I had planned to do this on my own. Alison came along to keep me out of trouble. If you ask her, she’s likely to say it was her idea about 25 years ago, when she suggested we do something similar.

EH: Readers cannot but wonder how they would hold up, in these circumstances. I pictured a long leisurely walk through a French countryside movie. Cows, chateaux…oh, perhaps a few mildly strenuous stints.  I was so wrong. This was a test of all your combined resources. It would be for any couple. 72 days of togetherness and real physical hardship. And you had already spent years collaborating on your books.

DD: Like some old couples, we have merged in mind and spirit — if such a thing exists — while remaining very different people, and very pig-headedly independent. So, while we were together on the pilgrimage, we were often apart both in our mental spheres and physically. Alison stopped constantly, ran ahead, took detours, disappeared, got lost—often, though not always, in pursuit of a photograph. She probably walked twice as many miles as I did. By the end of the pilgrimage, my regard for her had only deepened. I can’t speak for her, of course.

How to Drink Wine in Moderation

I love wine.

No, I mean I really, really love it. I love everything about it.

I love the sound of cracking the scotch tape when unloading cases, of pulling spongy and squeaky corks, of splashing it into freshly-polished glasses, of that first sip of something unexpected; the way it fills my mouth as though the liquid were fermented from the late-summer fireworks of my youth.

I love spending Saturdays arranging my personal collection, of browsing stores, cantine and supermarkets the way women think of trying on clothing, with no intention of buying any, but just to be around the stuff: pleasure through osmosis. I love pulling out the horizontal bottles to read the labels, how my mind tries to predict, or if I’ve been lucky, to remember what the contents are like, whether it was sunny that year, cloudy, whether is came from places far away, where farmers train their vines in radically different ways and call their mothers words other than ‘mamma‘.

As a teacher, I love being asked about a favourite wine, of how I’ll adjust my weight in my seat, half surprised myself by the long and beautifully nuanced explanation that seems to channel through me, as welcome as an old friend.

I love books about wine, and have hundreds of them, crammed and jammed into a 17th-century bookcase, four doors wide, the books themselves, marked with my horrific hand-writing and years and years of faded purple rings.

I love the history of a very different Europe, when wine traveled by barge, by clipper ship, where it poured from countless clay pots, crystal decanters and leather pouches.

Of course an attentive reader will notice that I never mentioned the alcoholic effect of wine, which of course that is what this essay is really about.

I love that too, and maybe a little too much.

17 ways of eating on a budget without sacrificing your health

  1. Never shop on an empty stomach.
  2. Buy in bulk.
  3. Visit your supermarket as little as needed and make precise shopping lists.
  4. Don’t buy more than needed. Stick to your shopping lists.
  5. Make a budget, stick to it, and keep track of all expenses.
  6. Know your supermarket well and be wise to supermarket tricks.
  7. Limit your dining out. Eat at home.
  8. Shop seasonally and locally. It’s cheaper and healthier.
  9. Avoid all bagged, fancy packaged, ready-to-eat and processed food/meals (unless it is straightforward canned food). Avoid junk food unless it’s a treat you make at home from time to time.

  10. Eat more frugally (smaller portions) and only when you are hungry.
  11. Eat less meat, but more sustainable fish, cheese and eggs.
  12. Emphasize grains, legumes and vegetables (understand the food pyramid).
  13. Make double batches when you cook — one batch to eat straight away and one to freeze.
  14. Recycle leftovers and don’t waste food.
  15. Always stock your freezer with a selection of ice-friendly food, your kitchen pantry with imperishable and your spice cupboards with lots of condiments.
  16. Drink lots of tap water. Limit your consumption of alcohol, coffee, tea, sodas cut out most bought beverages. They represent a large expense.
  17. Take an interest in foreign and exotic culinary dishes, as they use bargain ingredients and small quantities of costlier ingredients.
