Migros’s home delivery service is perfect during this period of icy, snowy streets

Since I live in the old town in Geneva, I walk everywhere. A few years ago, I had shoulder and wrist injuries from carrying too many heavy shopping bags, and ever since, I’ve had to do my heavy grocery and household shopping with a trolley. A couple of years ago, after regularly hearing the leshop.ch ads on WRS, I decided to try and avoid pulling my heavy trolley, filled with milk, detergents, and other heavy products, up the hill from the Coop 2000 and the Boulevard Helvétique market to the Russian Church, so I tried leshop.ch. With the ice and snow on the streets, home delivery can definitely be a godsend.

Ferran Adrià promises that the La Fundación El Bulli exhibition will cover the entire evolution of what was for 5 years the best restaurant in the world, El Bulli, in Roses in the Catalonia region of Spain. The foundation will serve as an encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia, in that it will cover all the groundbreaking techniques of El Bulli, now closed, as well as of haute cuisine around the world, all free of charge.

Fooducate gives a layman’s explanation for understanding the differing degrees of danger with regard to food packaging, and how much BPA you might actually have in your bloodstream.

BPA stands for bisphenol A. According to the Mayo Clinic and the FDA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it may well pose a wide variety of harmful effects to health.

The Hard Facts, the Numbers

Now that food prices are on the rise and people in developed countries are tightening their purse strings, we are beginning what IMF Managing Director Christine LaGarde refers to as the “lost decade.” We are starting to think about food waste and food budgets — not something we talked much about over the last few decades. Unless we were in finance, we watched the price of cacao, but not much else.

“The average British shopper estimates that they bin almost 10% of the food bought in their weekly shop, while 8% admit to throwing away as much as a quarter of their food on a regular basis, according to new research on Monday,” says The Guardian.

Slow Food U.S.A. founder Josh Viertel ended up losing a large number of his core supporters after sponsoring what seemed like an idea in line with the hard economic times. How did he do this? By sponsoring the “ Challenge,” in which people were asked to “sign a pledge to cook a slow-food meal for not much more than the cost of a McDonald’s Extra Value Meal. To some, it was heresy.”

Many of its core members didn’t agree, since Slow Food’s message has been from the beginning that Americans were going to have to accept to pay more if farmers were to get fair pay.

David Downie: Christmas in Paris is All about Eating and Drinking, What Happened to Jesus?

In most Christian countries, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, to more or lesser degrees. In consumer-driven countries, much of Jesus’ birthday is lost as people scurry around looking for the perfect Christmas gifts.

David Downie thinks Christmas in Paris is focused mostly on food, and just a little on Jesus. The more foie gras, smoked salmon, champagne, and everything else rich under the sun you can slide down your gullet, the better. It’s about good food, but also about excess. It’s about dressing up all pretty and going from one meal or party to another. It’s about having a crise de foie or “liver attack”, as the French call it, after the holidays.

USDA: new guidelines for calculating fertilizer; runoff producing over-nutrition in waterways

Around the world, environmentalists and scientists are mobilizing to fight the plague of over-nutrition due to over-fertilization

The problem with farming today — whether fertilizer be conventional or natural — is that fertilizer runoff produces over-nutrition of waterways and other natural habitats.

So around the world, environmentalists and scientists are mobilizing to fight the plague of over-nutrition. That’s where the new USDA document comes in. It lays out a host of steps that farmers can take — and will have to take, if they get funding from certain USDA programs — to minimize the spread of nutrients outside farm fields.

Essentially, it involves putting farmland on a sensible diet. Only feed the land as much as it really needs. And don’t apply fertilizer, including manure, when the crops don’t need it. Also, try to capture and store any excess nutrients. For instance, grow wintertime “cover crops” that can trap free nitrogen before it leaches into groundwater.
